5G Auction: Spectrum auction ended today after 6 rounds, bids reached Rs 11,000 crore

 

5G Auction:

The Rs 96,238 crore spectrum auction for mobile radio wave services concluded on June 26 following six rounds of bidding that saw offers as high as Rs 11,000 crore. The auction began on Tuesday.


5G Auction: The government's Tuesday spectrum auction for 4G and 5G mobile services came to a close on Wednesday after six rounds. In all, telecom companies purchased spectrum for around Rs 11,300 crore, which is less than 12 percent of the radio waves the government had set aside for sale, which are estimated to be worth Rs 96,238 crore.

More than 10,500 MHz of spectrum in eight separate frequency bands—800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,800 MHz, 2,100 MHz, 2,300 MHz, 2,500 MHz, 3,300 MHz, and 26 GHz—are up for auction by the Department of Telecommunications. This spectrum has a base price of Rs 96,238 crore in total. Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (VIL) are vying for the purchase of this radio wave spectrum, which is crucial for 5G mobile services, in this auction that is taking place after nearly two years. The majority of bidders during the sale were focused on the 1,800 MHz and 900 MHz frequency bands.

Over Rs 11,000 crore was bid at the end of the auction.

As per the media sources, the auction concluded with an offer of approximately Rs 11,000 crore because no fresh bids were received this morning. This time around, Bharti Airtel won the auction with the highest bid. Telecom companies placed bids of Rs 11,000 crore on the first day of the spectrum auction. Telecom expert Parag Kar reports that on the first day, bids totaling around Rs 6,306.4 crore were received for the 1800 MHz band; in addition, bids of Rs 4,465 crore and Rs 360 crore were received for the 900 MHz band and the 2100 MHz band, respectively.


The last time Jio prevailed

A substantial amount of 5G telecom spectrum valued at over Rs 1.5 lakh crore was sold in the week-long auction in 2022. After paying Rs 88,078 crore to purchase nearly half of the airwaves, Mukesh Ambani's Jio topped the list. Bharti Airtel, owned by Sunil Mittal, also submitted a winning bid of Rs 43,084 crore, and Vodafone Idea paid Rs 18,799 crore for spectrum.
